Uses

Historically, Rangers were intended to be like the famed British commandos they were modeled after (raiders and covert ops. experts), but as WWII went on they were used as powerful assault and shock troops much like the Axis Stormtroopers. The Rangers in Company of Heroes are very elite and strong, capable of taking care of units from basic enemy infantry to enemy heavy armor, even when outnumbered.

They are an expensive unit, and their primary role is anti-armor, which they do well. Try to flank the enemy vehicle and get shots into the sides/rear. It is best to have at least 2 squads to do this. If you are under fire, use the fire-up ability to get out of the firing arc and behind the vehicle. The fire-up ability makes you difficult to pin, and can get you out of harms way quickly.

They are also excellent anti-infantry units, even more so with their SMG upgrade. They can use fireup to break pin and run behind a MG squad and drop a grenade, or just flat-out demolish most squads 1v1. Fire-up can also close you to touching range of a sniper very quickly. They are more than a match for any axis infantry squad.

They are a very expensive unit, though, so keeping them alive is a must. They can also lose their SMG guns, or AT weapons. AT weapons are not replaceable and the SMG guns are not cheap. The best bet is to retreat if you are in danger of losing a few of them, and keep them healed with a triage center. It is wise to attack armor with 2 or 3 Ranger squads, but when against enemy infantry, 1 is good enough. If you plan on capturing enemy weapons or weapons dropped by your forces (BAR's, MG42's, Panzerschrecks etc.), you can only do this without the Thompson SMG upgrade, extra firepower isn't such a bad thing, especially if its a MG42 LMG or an extra Bazooka or Panzerschreck.
