Uses

It walks all over infantry that don't possess any anti-tank ability. However, because alot of Axis infantry possess some form of anti-tank, it is best to not leave them unsupported. This is a medium tank, and can't really hold its own vs most axis tanks. Always make sure it has some anti infantry and anti tank support along with it. Its only real strength is its mobility and speed. You can out-maneuver most axis tanks and get some rear or side hits in, or at the very least avoid the gun for awhile. The turrets of many axis tanks track very slowly, and by running in circles you can avoid many direct hits. Tanks like the Stug have almost no tracking ability, so running in circles like a gurly man is surprisingly effective. You can also have one Sherman supported by Engineers take the brunt of the enemy fire and have all your other tanks flank the enemy tank to get some rear hits in. Often axis tanks have very powerful front armor and weak rear armor.

This tank has some very effective upgrades. Upgrading the main gun makes it much more effective against enemy armor. The main cannon upgrade takes the Sherman from 2 vs to 5 vs armor. A significant upgrade. The .50 upgrade is also highly effective, and is capable of pinning infantry. Unfortunately, the gunner on this is easily killed. The smoke canister is a good "Oh shit, a Tiger is hitting me" last resort. The mine flail is effective against mines, and also does some cool things when it runs into enemy infantry...

While many people don't have a high opinion of this tank, it is fairly useful when used correctly. It's also probably the best line of defense against flakpanzers. Just don't expect it to be an Axis tank, always keep them supported, and try to use more than one in a group.

Counters

Not much to say here. It's a weak tank, and pretty much anything with any anti-armor use is capable of killing it. Allies can get this fairly early, so it is always wise to have an anti-armor backup plan in case they try and rush you with this unit.
