Homeworld Universe, or HWU, was a fansite dealing with the Homeworld-series of games. HWU was formed in a merger between Homeworld X and Homeworld Fleet Command. Initially, the administration staff consisted of ceejayoz, dmille, Furton, Red94, and Sabin.

History

Homeworld Universe launched 5 April 2002 using a modified version of the blogging software PHP-Nuke and briefly beat out rival Relicnews in hits.[1] In 2003, HWU shut down for 5 months, partially in protest of the manner in which Relic distributed news to fansites. On 30 July 2003, Homeworld Universe relaunched with a new design and the MovableType blogging software.[2]

Homeworld Universe was initially hosted by Gamespy. Due to the onerous restrictions placed on fansites by Gamespy, HWU moved as quickly possible onto the new Homeworld Community Server.

Furton, of Homeworld X, would later leave HWU in an attempt at starting his own game fansite network. In his departure, he demanded that Homeworld Universe remove all content he had created or assisted with. HWU refused, and Furton was not heard from again. Red94, of Homeworld Fleet Command, slowly lost interest in the Homeworld community and drifted away, returning once for several weeks.

On 27 May 2004, Homeworld Universe became RelicUniverse.[3]
